I wasn't aware Curly Schaefer had been with the Wirth Show.
He was in charge of the Ringling elephants in 1944 after Eddie Allen left and held that position at the time of the fire.
I never met him but I'm sure some of you West Coast guys remember Curly from 1,000 Oaks.

At the top of the front page of today's Long Island Newsday is a picture of an elephant with the caption "PETA vs. The Circus - The battle for kids'hearts A6-7." Inside there are two full pages of how PETA came unannounced to an elementary school, causing the school to be locked down and creating quite a stir among school officials. It was done at a school near Nassau Coliseum where RBBB is showing this week. It has given the show a chance to state its side and a whole lot of publicity.

I remember Curly well. He was great to know and a terrific animal man. Like many others who were there, he never spoke of Hartford. He was married for a time to a Thousand Oaks gal named Jean Roper. Curly was associated with the Compound, but more on an in-and-out consultant basis on many projects, rather than a full-time regular employee. We never saw Curly that he didn't have a host of colorful stories to tell, and no one could top him telling jokes. God rest him.

Joe Geiger was known professionally as Joe Wallenda and came over from Germany as part of the original Wallenda act. His wife Margie was a Sarasota girl who did not come from circus and never performed.

Yes Margie Geiger has been an excellent aerial performer over the years and has coached other young professianals in aerial artistry plus being a beloved coach of the kids at Sailor Circus and is a wonderful member of our Sarasota circus community. She ad Willie Edelston [Robbins] and the late Guistino Loyal have all been excellent pro coaches at Sailor circus, among others. I trouped with Joe And Margie Geiger on Cole Bros. and she was known professianally as Marjorie Cordell.

I believe you will note that Curly Scheiffer was married to May Kovar at the time of her untimely death from the lion attack. Curly was a nice man and excellent elephant man. I only knew him for a short time but have good memories.
