Cristiani-Wallace, 13 Aug 1962 #14

14 – The young circus fan seen here still has a chair leg with deep claw marks and a whip handle given him by Kuhn. I’d welcome knowing more about Kuhn—where he had started and what became of him after Cristiani-Wallace. Apparently, he had his own show titled Kuhn’s in 1936-37 that later in that second season became Camel Bros. Partnered with Glenn Martin in 1951, he opened as Martin Bros. but it soon became Martin Bros. & Capt. Eddy Kuhn’s and for 1952-54 it was only Capt. Eddy’s Circus.

Apparently the Eddie Kuhn wild animal act was not with the Cristiani - Wallace show for the entire season in '62. The Albert Rix caged bear act was there in the earlier part of the season, but not sure if the act was there for the opening stand.

Eddy Kuhn was with us on the Frank Wirth Circus dates in 1961.

He had also been on Roger Bros before that (1950)?
Was thinking that he had retired in the Hugo area as I remember seeing him help Donnie Carr break a wild animal act for Carson and Barnes in the early 70's in winter quarters at Hugo.
Dory gave me a wagon wheel that he had saved, and I believe it is one of these. Wish I had taken better notes of the truck inventory in the grave yard at Hugo, but I was more interested in the stuff they had purchased from Ringling at the time.

When I read the name Martin Bros. & Glenn Martin it sort of rang a bell. Isn't that the same Glenn Martin that I was "Co." for in the '50's, (George Hubler), I seem to remember George talking about a connection eith Eddie.

Years ago, someone gave me an old program from the year that Eddie Kuhn appeared in Cleveland’s Public Hall with the Al Sirat Grotto Circus. In the program was an article about Eddie saying that he was allergic to cats and had to take an allergy pill before every performance. (This story might have been cooked up by some circus press agent on a slow news day.)

Mr. Kuhn's allergy to his cats was generally known. I was told that on one occasion after hearing that an extra performance had been called due to an overflow crowd, he suddenly collapsed from this malady.
Fearing there would be no cat act, Lucio rushed to his side and began fanning his brow with a $100 bill and the recovery was remarkable.

Casey Mcoy. Take note Mr.Kuhn was being fanned with a 100.00 bill in 1962 and John Ringling fanned you with 25.oo in 2009. Heck of a Hugo recession.

Lucio wasn't still paying fuel bills from the year before either...
We should all be happy to not be paying 4.00 bucks a gallon for diesel and have some hope of working this year.

The last I heard of Eddie Kuhn before knowing of his passing, was that he was driving a taxicab in Kansas City. Can anyone verify this?

The 1958 and 1959 Cristiani Bros. route books list Eddy, Charlene, and Jean Kuhn. Perhaps wife and daughter? I only remember his wife when I caught the show.

According to Jeanette Rix, her father Albert had the caged bear act on Cristiani Wallace from May 28 - June 16, 1962.

I'm not sure exactly when Eddie Kuhn came on the show. An audio tape of the shows performance that was made in Nov. 1962 does include the Kuhn act, so I can assume he was there for the season's closing.

Sorry Anonymous,
Haven't been on the blog in awhile. But to get the facts correct it was $20.00 no $25.00.

To Roger Smith,
Had been looking for the notice of Mr.Kuhn's passing and found this in the Circus Model Builders in 1979.
"Edward P."Eddy" Kuhn,64 of Piculiar, Mo., died on April 29,1979, in Kansas City, Mo. following an operation.
At age 21 he owed and managed the Kuhn Bros.Circus, later using the Camel Bros.title. In 1951 he operated the Capt.Eddy Trained Wild Animal Circus. Kuhn presented a large mixed wild animal act on Rogers Bros Circus in 1948 and was featured on Cristiani Bros. in 1958 and 1959.
He later appeared with Carson and Barnes and also with Kelly-Miller circus. After retiring as a performer/trainer he operated a number of kiddie rides that developed into a medium sized carnival called the K and K shows."
It goes on to say that he had been a honoray member of the model builders, and was survived by his wife,Charlene, son Edward Jr.,and two daughters,Joyce and Jeanne.

So turns out this is my cousin twice removed. Can anyone advise where I might find more information? Links to audio?
