Circus Day Cover

Circus Day Cover, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Not quite as obscure as North’s music is OH! YOU CIRCUS DAY from 1912 (the year the TITANIC went down.) It was quite a big hit in its day and, although it came from Tin Pan Alley, managed to find a place in the traditional circus music repertoire. Merle Evans used it on at least one of his FITCH BANDWAGON radio broadcasts in the early 1940s and also on one of his LP record albums. Bill Pruyn later used it for the 108th Blue Unit Edition of the Ringling show. (It was one of the numbers played during the finale while the net was being rigged for Elvin Bale’s cannon act.)

For those out there who still remember this song and who would like to have the music and lyrics, here they are. Since they are now in Public Domain, they can even be used commercially without having to pay royalty fees to ASCAP, BMI or any of the other big music licensing companies. Enjoy.

Yes, a familiar tune who's name I never knew.
