This photo of a grim driver with his horseless carriage is an omen of the circus and the monster truck marriage.
It was a shot gun wedding.

The Duryea on Barnum & Bailey 1896. Maybe someone thought that the "horse-less" carriage belonged on exhibit in the menagerie? Lithos show it in a spec, a photo exists confirming it in parade. There had been a steam-propelled vehicle on two shows in 1864, this was the first internal combustion rig.
