Performng Elephants Vote!

To all:
Please follow/paste link above to vote in MSNBC online poll regarding elephants in circuses. Forward this to friends.
Pasted below you will find poll question and available responses. My vote is highlighted in red.
The MSNBC poll evidences bias against circuses. It precludes opportunity to vote in favor of retaining elephants in circuses with acknowledgment that elephants receive excellent care, and two out of three of the responses are anti-circus.
Renee Storey

Should circuses be forced to stop using elephants in their acts?

WE TRIED ON EACH OF OUR LAPTOPS TO NOT ONLY VOTE, BUT TO ADD A COMMENT.
WE FOUND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO ADD A COMMENT AND ONCE YOU VOTE YOU ARE DONE, IE. YOU CAN ONLY VOTE ONCE.

MY COMMENT WOULD HAVE BEEN ALONG THE LINES OF...THESE SAME PEOPLE WHO WANT TO "PROTECT" ELEPHANTS ARE THE SAME ONES WHO BOMB RESEARCH LABS AND IN SOME CASES KILL RESEARCH SCIENTISTS. THEN OF COURSE THERE ARE THE HUNDREDS OF DEAD DOGS DUMPED IN DUMPSTERS.

TOO BAD THE PUBLIC ISN'T SHARP ENOUGH TO REALIZE THAT ELEPHANTS ARE ONLY A PART OF THE PLAN. EVENTUALLY THEY'LL BE GOING AFTER ANYONE WHO OWNS HORSES, POTBELLIES, ETC ETC........YOU BETTER HIDE FIDO AND KITTY NOW.

THEY WANT TO "SAVE" ELEPHANTS?? WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO SAVE ELEPHANTS IN THE WILD ? ? ?

IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ELEPHANTS IN THE WILD (AND OTHER EXOTICS) GET PETER BEARDS BOOK, "END OF THE GAME" THE BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS ARE GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING TO SAY THE LEAST.

LASTLY, YES I'M ALMOST DONE FOR NOW, WHY DOESN'T SOMEONE RAISE THE QUESTION OF HOW MUCH GOOD PETA'S MILLIONS WOULD DO IF USED TO FIGHT CHILD ABUSE, SPOUSAL ABUSE, FIND CURES FOR CHILDHOOD DISEASES LIKE MD, ETC AD NAUSEUM. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO "PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST"??

Renee,
How in the world do you see two against and one for the circus? I was pleased as it showed an unbias but a definite need for regulation/standard.

I have been tracking the MSNBC poll since early this morning and the numbers have changed drastically.
This morning the vote stood like this.
Yes 51%
No 28%
No But 21%
In a campaign with others to get the word out within the industry asking for support on this issue, a major difference has been made in the poll within hours.
Those of you showing support by voting NO have turned the tide.
As of 3:45 pm the numbers look like this:
Yes 43.8% a 7.2% drop
NO 37.3% an increase of 9.3%
NO But 18.9% a decrease 2.1%

The yes and No gap has been closed from a 13 point spread this morning to a 6.5% spread this afternoon.

Keep it rolling

The only time circuses should be stopped are when horse racing is stopped. dog racing is stopped fishing is stopped birds in cages are stopped what about horse dressage. and if they dont stop drugs & crime around the world there will be no one to watch Elephants i bet there would be plenty of humans around the world
wish they had the life of a circus Elephant. Robert Perry Australia

It is suspicious that the only "PRO" circus option of voting is "No, Elephants are an essential part of the circus tradition." I really wish "No, because not all Circus elephants are abused" had been a choice. Voting No because it is tradition is along the lines of saying "yeah, they aren't treated so great but it has been this way forever and the kids think the shows are neat."

I think Soliel has debunked the "essential" part. I am not agreeing with the AR radicals by any stretch, I am just pointing out that the poll may be rigged by having the questions it has.

Option 1 being: Yes. Elephants are harmed physically and emotionally by performing.

Why didn't we get: No. Elephants are NOT harmed physically and emotionally by performing.

To Casey
You are absolutely correct in your observation about how the poll questions are presented.
Reading the MSNBC articles which are and have been skewed in the past and present supporting the animal rights groups, it is no surprise the questions have been set up and presented the way they are.
I had asked some casual friends to participate in the poll and they became confused thinking they were to vote yes. They thought and hesitated calling me to double check about voting no. They assumed the yes would be supporting elephants and the circus. At least they took the time to call me and verify prior to voting.
It's now 9:30 pm and the gap has closed.
YES 41.7%
No 40%
No But 18.3%
Now only a 1.7% difference.
If you count the No Buts who do not want elephants to disappear from the circus but would like tighter regulation we have a commanding lead.

Joe,
I have been trying to understand you and Renee reasoning all day, and I just don't get it. Could you explain it one more time please, because it sure looks to me like there is a fair vote for everybody. One for the anti, one for the pro's, and one for the betweener's. My vote was easy and obvious.
It seems like animal trainers, fan's and producers are reading it two different ways.

I have not heard from Renee so I can not comment on her take on this.
The "yes" vote statement is very strong implying that elephants are "harmed physically and emotionally by performing". I believe an average person responding to this survey with the choices offered could be swayed by how this statement is presented and written.
The "no" vote merely speaks to keeping elephants in the circus because it has been a tradition. Not a very powerful argument vs. the YES statement.
On the surface "tradition" is pitted against "harmed physically and emotionally". To the average person the hell with tradition when people or animals are being harmed.
I tend to agree with Casey and his take on the yes/no statements. His are equal and straight forward. Not any room for debate.
Or as an example I put a NO statement together.
No. Providing the elephants are properly cared for and monitored by the proper animal care agencies. This gives a person a little more to think about vs. tradition.
I think the, as I call it, "no but" statement is a safe vote for those that want to be politically correct without knowing many of the facts. It really is a safe vote.
As with any poll it depends on who is conducting it, how is it put together, and who is it targeting. I guess that is why there are many polls for everything under the sun prior to presidential elections which stirs a hail of debate.
I hope this provides you with a better understanding of where myself and some others are coming from.
Look at voting as an average person off the street who is not as informed as we are, possibly you will see my point.
I enjoy your comments on this blog and enjoy visiting your blog.
As of noon today
Yes 38.2%
No 43.9%
No But 18%

Casey, great point!! I say damn the networks, they stopped REPORTING the news years ago. All they've done in recent years is to SELL the news to make money for the company. PETA, as we all know, is on the same track more or less...rake in all the money you can, flap your gums and don't do a damn thing of any real value or benefit to a living being.

Joe,
I did not see it that way at all. Tradition we have always had them, can be found on any circus site, and referenced a thousand times at any convention. I did look at it from an outsiders view, that's where I spent half my life, remember.
I was glad to be given the opportunity to vote, that said yes, but it needs to be fixed, instead of the weak "tradition argument." If that had been the chose between gone forever, I couldn't have made a vote. I suggest instead of a definite yes or no, by adding a maybe they were totally fair. When it is not even close to wrong, or not even close to right, this thing can be fixed is indeed a confidence booster.

Well, I just found out about this but I was unable to vote. Why?

I would have voted NO. Keep the Elephants.

Wade: you know I'm in your fan club, but I gotta say i've benefitted greatly from countless trips to the Circus and made many friends that I value highly.

"Damn everything, but the Circus ."
