This master shot shows the panicky crowd pouring out of the burning big top with the elephant herd hard on its heels. (A scene like this is exciting because it is real!) |

Burning big top, or fires staged behind a small top to make it look like a tent fire?
While doing preliminary work for the DeMille film, the production team screened every available circus movie they could find, including, we must assume, this one. DeMille would probably have had a field day, staging a big fire sequence such as this one, but with memories of the Hartford fire still fresh in everyone’s minds, Concello and North were adamant that no fire scenes of any kind appear in the film.
During the 1970s when “disaster” films were all the rage, I seem to recall the Felds announcing that they were planning a circus disaster film that would star Gunther and Charly Baumann. Apparently cooler heads prevailed, since nothing ever came of it.
I was on the show when that rumor surfaced, Irwin Allen was to be the producer.
Gunther and Charly as movie stars. Does anyone remember when Tito Gaona, during his fling with Lee Meriwhether, starred in what everyone groaned over as "that movie"?
Yes, I remember her visiting and the announcement of their "engagement".
That's only a 2 ring top! Where is the real circus of this era?
