Capt, I remember you telling me NOT to ever lead an elephant over the ears with a hook.

Gary,
I was told the exact same thing by Lou Regan my first day on the job 34 years ago.

This particular Elephant would take of if he noticed a dog, crane, jackhammer, under pass, laud noise etc. I just to check out the walk first before I would unload for things that could set her of and try to reroute the walk if possible if there was to many obstacles. She would turn and run back the way we came and of course the rest would follow. Like I said before the Elephants where hobbled before I came so the could not run but the bunched up and it took sometimes forever to get them apart again. The run on me about 3 times until I figured out all the tricks to stop them from doing so.

With the necessity to change the elephant walk route, is that a rolled up street map, the lead gent is carrying?

In Lake Charles, LA Gunther and Henry finished the animal walk 2 elephants short. They followed the police siriens to a local mall where they found the two 'cooling it' in a big fountain.
