What is this animal with the striping typical of zebras and the head nearly of a mule?
Bob
These are hybrids of a large breed of donkey and a Grevy zebra. Grevy's are the largest zebra and have the reality narrow stripes seen here. More common are Grant zebra and donkey hybrids often called zedonks or zonkeys.
These are two of the hybrids mentioned by Jim Alexander.
S-F bought them from the USDA. They were sired by a Grevy zebra stallion. The USDA sought to produce an animal that had the zebra’s resistance to the tsetse fly but the work stamina and tractability of a mule.
As anyone who has been around Grevy zebras will attest, they can be as savage as any animal one can encounter.
Buckles,
Wonderful set of "cart and carriage" pictures, probably the best there has been. Thank you for posting them.
RJR, don't stop now. Spread your wealth of knowledge. There is a lot of great material here on these pictures, and I am awaiting further schooling.

Richard,
Ditto to what Wade said about your wealth of knowledge. And you (and Thayer) were much missed at the last CHS gathering. Buckles: as Wade said, nice idea for a group of photos. The older photos may not get the commentary images taken within our own lifetimes generate but they are much appreciated, as is the blog. Thanks to both of you.
