Wally Naughton on Ringling before he went to Circsu Vargas. Wally had a super act on Vargas and saw him many times with that circus. Very classy. Harry
I Believe Wally Naughton had 17 bears being lead down the track on the RBBB. Quite a sight indeed. A two thumbs up from this guy.I got to visit with Rene recently as he stopped by at the Evansville date a year or so ago.Quite a lot of animal training talent in this set of photos.
We had Wally and his family with us on Castle in '72 & '73, and his bear act was flash and class to the max, a great standout. Along with that, they continued such class among their friends in the backyard.
The Wally Naghtin Family (note spelling, no relation) was on the Vargas show BEFORE Ringling and after Ringling. I first met the Naghtins on Vargas when the show played the New York City metro area (70's); it was a fast hello and goodbye, I'm sure they won't remember. I was visiting Johnny Peers and donated a beat-up old trombone to his arsenal of props. During this stand there was a dispute between Vargas and the musicians, so the entire performance was done WITHOUT music.
If my memory serves me right, Wally during his pre maritial era,was not a stranger to a flying act riggin or a teeterboard; also Rex Williams during that time period.
Only met Mr Naghtin a couple of times over the years and also found him to be a fine gentleman. Am sorry and regret to say I never saw his bear act (17,W O W!).
JIMMY HALL: When we played the Calgary Stampede building on Castle, I roamed the corridors discovering their Hall of Fame for the acts which played there, and Wally Naghtin was dressed in white tights in a photo with the Flying Valentines.
Befor Vargas, Wally was on Howard Suez's Clyde Bros. show. They played The Shreveport,La. Shrine show in the 60's. One year He, Res Williams and another person (maybe 2) put together a flying act in two weeks after aflying act cancelled. On the Ringling show, the 17 bears were split between the three rings. Simone and his wife presented in one ring and I cannot remember who was presenting in the other ring. Jack Painter
It was a afine three ring animal display with the Naghtin bears in rings 1 & 3 and the Rudi Lenz Chimps in the center. A very impressive moment of the Greatest Show on Earth. To think that we took it as business as usual and never thought it would be the end of an era.
wally's bears were in the Circus Hall of Fame winter show in 1964/65 and were particulatly impressive in the intimate setting. wally was also the manager of the troupe for howard suesz, who produced the show. the bears were amazing with their tricks, and were probably less than 10 feet from the audience the crowd loved them and so did the staff. wally was very professional and great to work with. and had many stories to tell the young tour guides workig there that winter.
