Show Time Tonight! (From Barry Miller)

gallery_pic04, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Hi Buckles:

Attached are photos of several circus posters that I have collected since I have had my computer. I don't mean to imply that I own these posters. I have collected the illustrations from the computer.

"I decided these pictures would be appropriate since I am taking the grandkids to our Sarasota Showfolks Circus tonight.
I always announce my attendance in advance to alert the artists so they can get out the good wardrobe."

Silvan-Drew last rolled around about 1929, so there has to be a story of some sort behind how this color image came into being. That's far too early for most color photography.

From the 1931 issue of the National Geographic written by Bev Kelley and taken in Washington D.C. in 1929.

Color photography does go way back to the 19th century though rare. More often encountered are Autochromes, a process invented in the first years of the 20th century (there is a famous color photo of Mark Twain in his smoking jacket reading in bed). The Silvan-Drew photo and many other color circus photos appeared in the very well-known Bev Kelley article published in the October 1931 National Geographic. The color photo there of the Sells-Floto ticket wagon now at Baraboo was the source for its color scheme.

This specific image is NOT the same photo published in the Geographic. The one that was used, very similar but with more kids, is the one more recently posted by Dave Price (thanks, Dave!). So the question is where did this specific image come from? To my knowledge, the only Silvan-Drew billstand with this group of kids was the single one in the Geographic. So where did this new image, obviously taken at the same time, come from? Barry Miller, please let us know.
