Not long ago, there were some comments on this blog related to sideshow banner art. Here are some interesting examples. According to old-time banner painter Fred G. Johnson, “The secret of the banner art is color and never mind if you exaggerate the subject matter. The idea is to attract attention. We call it ‘flash.’” (Unfortunately, all of my examples are in black & white!) |

All of these images are from Fred Fried's book "America's Forgotten Folk Arts." He has a good chapter on banner art.
The Witching Waves was on Johnny J. Jones Exposition. It made its debut in 1916 and was a ride conceived and built by Hyla Maynes. There's another photo of the front, about 1917, in a W. H. B. Jones photo.
The "Main" object of Banners is..to Sell admissions...In fact..I stopped by to see Jim Hand a couple of days ago (He's touching up some banners for me) After veiwing the Progress I proclaimed "Jim, these are GREAT!..however they could land me in handcuffs!"..Mr. Hand then replied.."Yea, but at least they will get you Bail money!".....
