Saddened to learn of Paul Newman's passing.

Oh Barbara, you were able to get that close to him....the most beautiful man ever? I am sooo jealous. Was he as stunning in person as in pictures? We are all so saddened to learn of his passing. What a real gentleman and legend. Karen Glenn

Incidentally, Paul's first wife was Jackie Witte, from Beloit, WI.

paul newman was a true legend, an icon among actors. over the years i was an entertainment writer covering movies and televison, i interviewed almost every major star, and i respected paul newman as a person as much as i respected him as an enormously talented actor. he was probably the most non-star star i ever met. he always seemed slightly embarrased by his status as a superstar and never allowed it to affect him as a person. for example, when he made arrangements for a limo to, say, pick him up at the airport, he usually requested a volkswagen -- and sat in the front seat with the driver. much has been written about his reluctance to sign autographs. he told me that if he had time, he'd talk to fans as long as he could, but he wouldn't sign autographs because "they don't really want my autograph, they want the autograph of the man they see on the movie screen, and that's not me, that's the character i'm playing."

barbara is very lucky to have had her picture taken with him; he must have really liked her, because he didn't often pose for photos unless he had to for promotion for a specific movie or charity. i understand he was a big fan of the big apple circus. he was a very humble and very private person and did everything he could to stay out of the limelight unless he was promoting a film or another project he felt passionately about. "The Verdict" was the film he felt was his best, and he was very proud of his work in it. we will miss him as a great person as much as we will miss him as a great actor.

I believe it was on the "Grandma Goes West" edition that I had the privilege, and pleasure of photographing Mr & Mrs
Newman when they visited the backyard after the show. I remember them both, but particularly he, as being incredibly gracious and charming and willing to pose for pictures with anyone who asked...and just about everybody asked. A very fine actor to be sure, but moreso
an exceptional humanbeing. They don't have people of his caliber in "Hollywood" any more.

One of my fondest circus memories.
