Very nice photo of the Gunther we knew in those early years. I note some 12 elephants with the younger Banana and Baby at the end of the line right in front of the obvious young, not full grown Congo. nSo when coming to Ringling he also brought the Ringlings owned "chipperfield Five" for a total of 17 and then when added the three I brought from Baraboo would give a herd total of twenty. I believe at the time the Hugo-Blue herd was 19.
The more things change, the more they stay the same...20 elephants on one unit back then and now about 20 elephants total on ALL THREE UNITS.
How did Ringling come to own the Chipperfield elephants? Did Chipperfields, Billy Smarts and Mills stop touring around the same time? I remember some of the elephants with white stars on their hindquarters and was told they came to the USA that way.
I notice Ringling had a cancelation, I wonder if that was the mistake of the building or of the promoter. Either way that person's car is about to be crushed in the upcoming FELD MONSTER TRUCK show.
Dear Mr. Ratliff,
Very interesting picture. As you may know I am very interested in Circus Williams and was wondering if you could send me this picture and any other pictures you might have of Circus Williams in the 60's. I would greatly appreciate it. My email is mkristen(att)circus-williams.de (Please replace the (att) with an @ ). Thank you very much. Marco
