Apparently he couldn't tell trouble was a bruin.

Hey Henry, doesn't this kind of bring back the old days when Jackie Althoff was on the Red show for about a week during rehearsal for the 73 season?
After a couple of bears escaped they went over to the Blue show.
We were visiting the Blue during one of the escapes and Jackie got stuck in the ring with the rest of his bears. That's when Charlie Bauman ran after the bear with a short piece of pipe. When he cornered the bear his backswing caught some helpful ringstock guy right between the eyes. The poor dude looked like Feld's unicorn by the 2nd show.
Tuffy was Gen. Mgr. of Red Show and was watching prop set rehearsal. Jackie grabbed a prop boy and shoved him towards a prop. Tuffy immediately went to Feld and announced that Althoffs bears would not be with the Red Unit ande back to the Blue Show they went. Everyone cherred Mr. Genders. He went about his business of being the "GEN> MGR>" I was there when it happened. I believe Jackies reputation preceeded him.
The story from Johnny Herriott about Jackie Althoff is 100% true, we were also watching the whole incident.
Jackie had been on the Blue Unit and the cab of the bear truck was painted blue, when he was transferred to the Red Unit he painted it red, After Tuffy’s outburst and Jackie was sent back to the Blue Unit he then repainted the truck blue.
I heard that while showing the old Uline Arena a couple of neighborhood toughs hid under the bear truck with designs of robbing Jackie when he came to get the bears.
Bad mistake!
The assailants, bruised and battered, later returned with the Police claiming they had been attacked.
Wow... my bad.
I thought it was because the bears were getting loose at rehearsal. They never tell the clowns anything!
BTW... Jackie Althoff would be the last guy I would have ever braced...
