Most bears can pop open a car or pickup door faster than a car thief; it happens all the time in parks when people leave food inside the vehicle. It's really not much protection from a grizzly bear. Perhaps the passenger could have provided a diversion, but who wants to stage a replay? What not simply have a realse cord or mechanism operated from inside and then use noise to scare the bear, as they do with unwanted bears? Looks like an overhaul of the practice would be in order here. Lions in Africa won't attack someone sitting in an open vehicle, at least that's what they show on TV.
It is so unlikely that a bear who is coming out of, probably a shot in the ass with a tranquilizer gun, to do this. 999 out of a 1000 bears would want to get the hell out of dodge rather than have a cockroach up their butt and stick around to tune up the ranger. In a situation like this however, once is enough. A lesson is learned. This looks like to large of a bear to be a sow. It sure would make more sense if it was a sow and they had her cubs close by squallering. On the other hand the bear is sporting a tracking device which could mean this is not its first time at this and could mean it's wise in the art of kicking ass. P.S.if one was aiming at this bear as he was being released with a tranquilizer gun, as fast as this happened, I doubt it would have taken effect.

Notice his pal in truck looking out the back with the window rolled up.

Anonymous,
Listen to J. C. Hall. He has matched wits with a bear or two in the past. Granted a half a wit, but a wit none the less. LOL
