Dedrick's Dog & Pony Circus #1

Scan10734, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Mr. Henry sent me this 8x10 montage of Bill Dedrick's dog and pony review.
The pictures were so clear I decided to present them individually.
He was a good friend of my dad's and worked out of Paramount, California.

You could see all of this dog and pony type performing from the 1880s onward, perhaps even before then. It filled the tents, made children giggle and laugh, along with understanding parents who enjoyed seeing their kids happy.

Today, kids are addicted to playing meaningless video games killing zillions of invaders or whatever. The number of them on Prozac and ritalin are unbelievable.

Mommy is working outside the house because daddy cannot earn enough alone, or is gone. Who takes the kids to a daytime show--grandma and grandpa? The day care center?

Eisner never spent a nickel to improve Disney's properties when he took over, but he escalated prices tremendously, causing people to think "Wow, I'm missing something, and it must be great because it costs so much." Disney ttendance jumped up and Eisner was considered a marketing genius.

The younger generations are forsaking "grandpa's" interests in professional sports, the circus and other entertainments for things that connect to their world. They see the wrestling shows every week at home, with their amateurish story-line theatrics and skin exposure. They collect their monster truck models. There's a viable connection with the audience.

It's largely not about the substance today, but image, perceived relationships, and how it's packaged and marketed.

Are the Soleil performers any more skillful than real circus others elsewhere? Or is that the hype that the media has sustained?

Beginning to see why the "morning show" was cancelled?
