I would like to think that this is Frieda, which Frank Buck had gotten from JRN in lieu of back wages from the 1938 Ringling tour. Frieda later ended up in the Cleveland Zoo (my home town) and was the first elephant I ever saw. They exhibited her at one end of the building where they had the meat-eating animals. During the warm weather, she was exhibited outside in a large, fenced-in circular area. (When I was about 8, I saw her eat a box of popcorn -- box and and all!) When she died in 1957, the Cleveland Press ran a nice obituary for her which mentioned that the zoo had acquired her from Frank Buck. |
