Roger the Rosin Back #1 (From Eric Beheim)

Rosin Back-1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

This series of exquisite drawings came from a 1961 children’s book titled ROGER THE ROSIN BACK, written and illustrated by Los Angeles artist Bernard Garbutt (1900-1975). Garbutt was a staff artist for the Los Angeles Times and covered county fairs, horse races and farming events. He also produced drawings for the Sunday supplements. Disney subsequently hired him to provide artwork for SNOW WHITE and BAMBI. He later taught at the Chouinard Art Institute.

In the book, Roger starts out his circus career as a baggage horse before being purchased by the “Bamindini Family” riding act. (The circus they perform with is not named, nor is the time frame when the action takes place identified. However, 8-horse baggage teams would tend to suggest that it is set the 1930s.)
