From Mike Naughton

RBBB tiger on horse, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

I believe it's Mr. Althoff's first year with RBBB.

He was only 1 season on Ringling and then his son Franzi came over with Evi his wife who took over the act. That year he made it on to the Ed Sullivan Show as well.
I remember when my Onkel came back to Germany, he brought back a Cadillac, a ride on mower, paper towels and shaving cream in the can. All things that where not available in Germany in them days.

Mr. Schroer,

With gas at $4.00 a gallon we can no longer afford to fuel a ride-on-mower or Cadillac. Also with gas so expensive we can no longer drive to the store to buy paper towel and shaving cream in the can.

Your comments are most entertaining and educational. Share with us some details about circus in New Zealand.

Looking forward to more of your comments.

The Shows in New Zealand are of the European type, 35meter round tent with 10 meter ring. Both of the touring Shows are owned by Weber Bros. One Show is called Weber Bros Circus and travels this year with a Chinese theme and therefore Chinese acts. The other Show is called Loritz Circus and has a African theme this year. The have a African Elephant that was purchased in the beginning of the year from a small Show that went belly up and acrobats from Kenya.
Because NZ has only 4 million people the budget for the Shows are not that big but the are very nice Shows.
Petrol prices over here went up 120% in one year and a gallon cost about US $ 7,-. We are lucky NZ is a very small Country and the distances between Towns are not that big. The do have a lot of Mountains.
In the beginning I trained some Miniature Horses, Goats, Pigs and Dogs for the Show but was not really my thing so I went in to Management and have been the Office Manager for quite some time.
Now I am semi retired but still very much involved with both Shows and special with a new one we are going to open in Australia in the end of September: "The Great Moscau Circus"

This is not Franz, but his brother Adolf Althoff, who was a great circus director too. Adolf started to present the tiger on horse in 1965, that was also his circus' last season. After closing his circus forever, in 1966 he went to the Usa with the act. The following two years, his son Franzi presented it with Evy.

Mr. Schroer;

The USA and New Zealand have much in common: we have 304 Million people and our budgets are very small, too! (wink)

Thank you for the info -- I am surprised that with such a small population that that the country can support two full-time circuses. The residents must like circuses obviously.

Please share any photos, yourself included!

I remember the Ringling program display was listed:
Presented by GGW or Henry Schroer.

Was that the leopard act or another?

Also, are you plagued by animal rights fanatics as we are?

Henry,

Greatly enjoyed your family pictures. Had never seen them before.

As others on the blog have said it is great to be in touch with you again. Those days we all enjoyed on Ringling together are wonderful memories.

My very best to you,

Jack Ryan
