Frank Buck #1 (From Hal Guyon)

Buckles,
I know that there`s been a lot about Frank Buck on your blog lately, but I ran across this picture today. It`s dated 1938, with the gentlemen wearing the pit helmets and carrying the rifles I was wondering if this had anything to do with Frank Buck in the spec? I do know that the Gargantua cage was pulled around the track during spec, I was wondering if someone would know this? I have also included a picture of a Frank Buck poster while he was on Russell Bros.

Hal Guyon

"This poster comes as a surprise. It would come from the 1945 season in which the show was owned by Art Concello.
Mr. Buck and Mr. Concello had trouped together on the Ringling Show in 1938 but I was not aware of this later arrangement."

Sure would be nice for someone to clarify this situation as to Frank Buck in 38. I was certain that he, Terrel Jacobs and Gargantua were on RBBB until it foldede and then turned up on Barnes-Floto owned by Ringling in 1938.

Both Frank Buck and Gargantua definitely joined the "Al G. Barnes Sells-Floto Presenting RBBB..." in Redfield, S.D. July 11, 1938 after labor problems shut down Ringling-Barnum in Scranton on June 22. Perhaps someone else can confirm if Terrell Jacobs also made the trip up to South Dakota and if/when he rejoined the show in 1938. Incidently Ringling's labor problems were in the news as far back as May 1938 when the show was in the Garden. In an interview with the NY Post on May 5, 1938 Frank Buck is quoted as saying that he wouldn't join the American Federation of Actors saying he was "a scientist, not an actor". He added: "Don't get me wrong. I'm with the working man. I worked like a dog once myself. And my heart is with the fellow who works. But I don't want some --- union delegate telling me when to get on and off an elephant." Incidentally - it is my understanding that at the end of the 1938 season John Ringling North actually gave some animals to Buck as partial payment for his salary that season. -Chris Berry
