Barnum's Book #14

Barnum-14, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Back in 1888, when Barnum’s book came out, Quaggas could still be found in Africa. In a chapter on zebras, he describes the Quagga and includes a picture of one. They have since become extinct.

The last quagga died in an Amsterdam zoo in 1883 (four years before Barnum’s book appeared) and wild quaggas on the plains of southern Africa were gone by the late 1870s. The only quaggas ever seen in America were exhibited by the Zoological Institute in the mid-1830s.
