Early 70s -- I'm in show business about 6 minutes -- Miller Johnson is playing Queens NY, open air at a stadium -- Parley is there -- his photo in the program -- I get his autograph but I haven't a clue to his rich circus association -- I just knew him as the Judge on an episode of I Love Lucy.
I still have the program and I'm glad I asked for his autograph.
In the show: Miss Loni, Shappi, Sensational Parker, Semon's Chimps, Wally Ross and Pat Anthony. This lineup is from memory; I might be incorrect.
Cool! There is Barbara with the boss Keebler Elf Voice (Parley Baer)! What year was this taken?
I remember them from our time with RBBB in LA. And, how nice they wear to take our kiddos for the night and to the plane the next day, when we had to send them back home to FL....we were crying and the kiddos were not...they were having a wonderful time with Mr and Mrs Parley! A long time ago. I have the picture of them with the kiddos before they left that day. Karen Glenn
IN 1972 or early 1973 Miller Johnson Circus played Orlando,Fl.This behind the Citrus Bowl. When we arrived for the afternoon show it was late starting .THe tent was a Harold Barnes rental.
We almost didnt go as there were no ads in the media.Upon arrival the lines were long.
Once the show started it was the best I had ever seen under the big top.Granted I was only 14 or 15 but new a great performance when I saw one.
Before it started I saw Parley Baer.I walked up and asked arent you on tv?He replied my names is Mr.Smith.Little did I know his history in the business at that time.
What was incredible was how he introduced Sandy Dobritch."Your ringmaster for this evening is."Very professional.
I never knew at the time just how many great acts were on the show.Pat Anthony,Oscar Cristiani, etc.
I met Vargas too.He gave me a load of pictures.Sadly I no longer have them.
Buckles were you in Orlando?
A bunch of us from Circus World visited the Vargas Show on that same lot in Orlando in 1974.
The show did capacity business that year.
I introduced Parley to Cliff when I was on the Vargas Show in 1972. In fact the three of us went over to the Forum that evening to see the Ringling Show, the first time Vargas had ever seen it, or so he said.
Afterward I asked him what he thought of it and he said he thought he could do better.
Karen, the picture of Barbara and Parley was taken at the LA County Fair at Pomoma in 1967.
We were doing pictures for the next year's program.
Buckles:
Does anybody have any photos of Rudy Jacobi and his Rudy Brothers Circus of the early 70s?The one where he had a huge top? That from what I read was a great show.I met Rudy when Tommy Bentley had his Bentley Brothers Circus in Ocala,Fl, early 90s.Great show that was as well.
Please NOTE:
If anyone returns to this posting today, August 5th:
This would have been Parley Baer's 94th birthday. He was born August 5, 1914, in Salt Lake City.
Importantly, on this day, Parley was 86, and was holding the hand of his beloved wife, Ernestine, at the moment when she quietly passed away in the year 2000, at the age of 79.
