In 1946 my father and I joined up with Bob Stevens, Stevens Bros Circus. My father did slack wire and chin balancing, and I worked the dogs and ponies---4 numbers. Dog act, riding dogs and ponies, hi diving dog, and Huskies and ponies.
When we first drove onto the lot, I was driving my fathers truck. Bob Strevens asked if my father could drive the truck, and told me "You can drive that one", which was the canvas truck. Quite an order for a 17 year old "punk". We stayed with Srevens Bros until the fair season started in mid June, and then went with Williams and Lee Attractions playing grandstand shows at fairs and rodeos.
In the fall we went with Clyde Bros indoor circus out of Oklahoma city.
All this brings back many old memories, and even now at age 80, I still get "itchy feet" to hit the road. Circus life was the best.
