Powers Elephants #1 (From Buckles)

My dad told me that the success of the act depended largely on having an elephant that would "talk" on command so that when the catcher approached the mound the audience could hear the chatter.
The batter must also tap on the plate before each pitch, etc.
An enjoyable act but too many props.

Floyd Smith did the baseball game with the St. Louis Zoo elephants in the 1960s. It was the basic version with the "slide for home" finale. It went over well in a baseball town like St. Louis. I never saw the first group of elephants (that were sold in 1954). They did a number of vaudeville routines and probably did the baseball game. Even Jules Jacot agreed that act was quite good.
