Audubon Zoo #1 (From Joey Ratliff)

An overview of our Zoo in New Orleans.

From Buckles:
"Today's pictures show the up side of elephants in zoos and should be shown at all zoological meetings.
As opposed to places that through either ignorance or inexperience allow their elephants to stand in piss all day then throw up their hands in horror exclaiming that their elephants have bad feet and thereby, all should be excluded from zoos."

Joey, the pictures look great so you looking for any keepers?

The Bronx Zoo used to have elephant "demonstrations" years ago
and rides too. Now they're not going to replace the elephants they have when they pass away. Sad.
very sad, especially for one who grew up in the Bronx in the '40's and had regular visits with 3 different species of elephants.

Cheers for the Audubon Zoo; I'll
probably never get there, but I'd sure like to.

Those "demonstrations" were actually ENRICHMENT...a VERY important subject for the keeper of ANY animal!

Who ARE these people making the "rules" these days...?

Joey,
With all due respect, I have seen enough bad/chopped up feet to last me a life time, and I have only spent a couple of years in a zoo. The real sad thing is it didn't have much to do with inexperienced, but had a lot to do with ignorance/who gives a damn.

Buckles, thanks for the kind words. These are the same things I try to get across to zoo guests, visiting staff from other facilities, etc. I also make mention that it is scientifically proven that working and travelling elephants out live "stand stills" by 11 years. Again I say, I am lucky to have a place that believes in this and gives me the freedom to act on it.
