"This would be the other Asian male "Sid" who remained with the show and later 4-Paw-Sells thru 1902.
This picture indicates that he was trained to lay down on the wrong side."

In every business there are right ways of doing things and "the wrong way". Now that you said it I have noticed that elephants are always laid down on their left side to wash, clean and in the ring. Is the reason because they will always lay the same way in the ring? Or.....?

Elephants, horses, ponies, etc. are trained to lie down on their left side, the side they are led from.

When I was at Lion Country, in Grand Prairie, Texas, they ran an elephant ride, and every damn one of the ride helpers walked the elephants clockwise on the right side. When I told them all lead stock is led from the left side, they gave me a dumb look and went right on walking them on the right. And their home-made bullhooks were as unbelievably bad as the make-ups of Shrine clowns. I took pictures of them as if I needed reminding that you cannot educate the town-monkey.
