More on "Cleopatra".

Johnny was kind enough to take the time to answer my questions on the "Cleopatra' movie. He said he worked on it's production for over a year due mostly to his father, Digger Pugh's, connection with Pinewood Studio in England and his business dealings with Circuses in Europe.
When they first started, the Togni elephants were used but for some reason had to leave, Digger contacted Dick Chipperfield and a deal was made for four elephants but no trainer was available and they were accompanied only by a Mahout. So at age 19 Johnny found himself in charge of a herd of elephants.
Johnny told of his experience herding them from the baggage car to the movie back lot. After the confinement of the long trip from England to Italy, they were pretty frisky and even attempted to climb into every fountain they passed but after a few days they settled down and for the most part they were fine animals.
He said that the pictures of them shown on the Blog recently were among the few things surviving the tornado that destroyed his home in DeLand.
The girls seen in the pictures were supposed to be tossing gold coins into the crowd and upon their arrival at the podium, Marc Anthony would swoop the first girl off the elephant and as the herd passed by, replace her on the last one.
Johnny added that racing back and forth from the set to the beach where the girls were, was so demanding that he decided to spend his movie income on a new Jaguar. He even managed to park it on the back lot saying that he was carrying supplies for the elephants when actually it contained the day's supply of beer, courtesy of Richard Burton.
After the elephants went back to Chipperfield a search began to locate horses like the ones used by the Roman Army. Again Digger Pugh saved the day by locating a number of that breed in Scotland so the procedure was repeated with Johnny now attempting to ride one at night while it jumped from a barge to the shore below and repeatedly falling into the freezing water.
When the movie was finally wrapped, Johnny found himself back in England without enough money to buy petrol so the Jaguar was sold.
When the movie finally came out he was with Mills Bros. Circus in the US and on a Sunday off "Cleopatra" was showing down town. After Johnny's detailed descriptions, all the performers were anxious to see him in action but as we now know almost all of his efforts were cut.

Incidentally Mr. Pugh mentioned that business so far this year has surpassed all expectations.

Buckles,
As Jim Clubb suggested, at least one was one of the best working elephants he knew. That's good because sending the elephants with a "mahout" to an inexperienced person on a movie set, doesn't sound too far removed from what is at times done today.

John Pugh: Why isn't he on Sarasota's Ring of Fame? Please someone get the attention of the Ring of Fames Committee. If the Cole Route and the 2011 Eastern CFA Convention dates would be exactly right for the CFA Convention it could happen. Mr.John Pugh would receive the honors he has earned over the years from the Fans. Cole Bros. is a winner this year don't miss it.....And remember this will be the year of the CAMELS..Just ask Mike Rice next time you see Cole Bros. Thank You John Pugh one of the great showmen of this era.

John can also tell you how much fun it was when that horse landed in the water, HIM IN FULL ARMOR!

I too have wondered why Johnny is not on the Ring of Fames?

I too love the old days of big shows with lots of action in three rings. However, hasving sponsored the show over a 15 year period, watching it arrive, set up, etc., it truly is amazing how he and the Byrds keep these big show on the road today with cost and legaleze! These people are truly special, amazing, and have a gift for a special love!

Armor into the water Ka-plunk!

I recall a scene in Cleopatra in which Marc Antony is on Cleopatra's floating palace, and he's extremely drunk, and is confronted by a bunch of Cleopatra doubles, and he can't tell which one is the real Cleopatra. I wonder if those are some of the Cleopatra doubles riding the elephant, and Richard Burton is doing a taste test to try and figure out which one is real. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were once having dinner with the Duke of Windsor and Mrs. Simpson, and he told Mrs. Simpson "You are the most vulgar woman I have ever met." He was still invited back.

In 1963, I attended the Hollywood premiere of CLEOPATRA at the Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, not as an invited guest, mind you, but as a common fan across the street. Hundreds of industry A-list-to-D-list people turned out, as they say, to see and be seen. It truly was a massive event, with stretch limos lining the Boulevard as far as one could see. The loudest cheers went up when Army Archerd announced the arrival of Lucille Ball. Want to know the kicker? Neither Liz, Dick, or Rex were on hand that night.

As for why Johnny Pugh isn't in the Ring of Fame--don't you worry--he will be.

When Johnny took over CBCB, there were Thirteen pages of Accounts Payable(single spaced). I know because I helped Willy Storey and Harry Hammond keep the books. By the end of that year those accounts spanned a mere three pages. It was Johnny's determination to make sure the bills were paid along with other previous debts, too. He wanted a clean start, and he got it. We ate a lot of beans & rice in the cookhouse that winter, but WE ATE...AND we all had jobs the next year, and the next and the next! There are a lot of people who can thank Johnny for the headaches he endured to keep the "Beatty" and "Cole" name afloat! I am one of them!
Thanks, Johnny!
