I had the great pleasure to visit with renowned Animal historian Richard Reynolds III a couple weeks ago. He highly recommended this book. I glanced at it briefly in all that we were doing. It really is a fabulous book.

G'day Buckles,
I just e-mailed John Edwards to ask him how anyone can order his book, I have known John since back in '78. John sent me a copy of his book several years ago, right after it was published!

As soon as I hear back from John, I will let you know!

I will say right off that this book is my favorite all time for wonderful captive animal photos.

There are photographs of animals that are now extinct such as quagga, bubal hartebeest, Syrian wild ass, Tasmanian wolf (Thylacine - - a carnivorous relative of the kangaroo if you will), and the pink headed duck.

In addition there are scads of photos of such things as Javan rhinos (none in captivity anywhere today), Sumatran rhinos, the first hippos in Europe in hundreds of year.

The book has the largest collection of Jumbo photos ever published - -over 20 of them plus dozens of pics of other famous elephants at the zoo.

It’s a must for any animal enthusiast. John Edwards told me he paid something on the order of 5,000 lbs for the right to publish all those ancient London zoo photos.

One of the zookeepers here bought this book at the London Zoo gift shop on a trip there. She let me look through it and I loved it. I found one on alibris.com about six months ago that I bought but in searching I found the London zoo's gift shop online and they had them for sale as well but for much more than alibris.

London zoo acquired a Javan Rhino in 1874 .This is the only Javan Rhino kept by the Zoological Society of London.
The only other known specimen in captivity was kept in an Ausralian Zoo .

Thanks that's extremely interesting.

The Wikipedia says that there have been at least 4 Javan rhinos in captivity in the 1800s, in London, Calcutta, and Adelaide, and that there have been at least 22 documented in captivity, and possibly more, since the Javan and Indian rhinos have been confused. They belong to the same genus. Calcutta Zoo was also the first to breed Sumatran rhinos in captivity.

The Javan rhino which Calcutta acquired in 1887 was still alive in 1892, and had lived for about ten years in the menagerie of the King of Oudh. It was a female. London Zoo's Javan rhino arrived on March 17, 1874 and lived for 10 years, 10 months, and 16 days. Adelaide Zoo's Javan rhino was the last one in captivity. It died in 1907.
