That tandem zebra hitch is something that you didn't see every day. How about some Birchall, Grevy and Transvaal animals hitches? They were on the Barnum show, maybe Barnes, hybrids on the ACC, etc.
One of these Sparks zebras was a rare Mountain Zebra. I think it may be the one the guy is riding. Other photos of it show the telltale characteristics of the mountain species – dew lap under the throat, very wide spacing between stripes on the rump, and gridiron pattern at the base of the tail.

I see that they do have snaffle bits in their mouth in some of the photos.
