That last e-mail should have said Tuesday, April 8th. We have today to get our e-mails, calls and faxes in. We just found out that elephant ordinance in Chicago will be up for a hearing in the Parks and Recreation Committee tomorrow!! Tuesday, April 8th. After the hearing, it could go in front of the full City Council for a vote the next day (Wednesday). If you or anyone you know in the area can attend Tuesday's hearing to show your support for elephants in circuses, we would greatly appreciate it! There may also be an opportunity for you to testify in opposition to this bill. In the meantime, letters of opposition will need to be sent to the Parks and Recreation Committee members as soon as possible. I have attached the contact information for the Committee members for your reference. Please feel free to share this information with the others in the area, and ask them to send polite letters to the Committee, asking them to vote NO on this ordinance. The Committee Chairperson, Alderman Mary Smith, is the sponsor of this ordinance. As drafted, the ordinance before the Parks and Recreation Committee would prohibit the use of guides and tethers. This is the same type of ordinance that has been going around the country. It prohibits the use of the training tools used to properly care for our elephants.
