That last e-mail should have said Tuesday, April 8th. We have today to get our e-mails, calls and faxes in. We just found out that elephant ordinance in Chicago will be up for a hearing in the Parks and Recreation Committee tomorrow!! Tuesday, April 8th. After the hearing, it could go in front of the full City Council for a vote the next day (Wednesday). If you or anyone you know in the area can attend Tuesday's hearing to show your support for elephants in circuses, we would greatly appreciate it! There may also be an opportunity for you to testify in opposition to this bill. In the meantime, letters of opposition will need to be sent to the Parks and Recreation Committee members as soon as possible. I have attached the contact information for the Committee members for your reference. Please feel free to share this information with the others in the area, and ask them to send polite letters to the Committee, asking them to vote NO on this ordinance. The Committee Chairperson, Alderman Mary Smith, is the sponsor of this ordinance.
As drafted, the ordinance before the Parks and Recreation Committee would prohibit the use of guides and tethers. This is the same type of ordinance that has been going around the country. It prohibits the use of the training tools used to properly care for our elephants. Please help any way you can, e-mail, fax and phone calls. There's pretty much no time left to fight this one. Thanks. ~Kari |

Cindy,
I may be wrong, but I think the leash laws for pets/domestic animals is for public safety, and sanitation.

Wade Burck
Mr. Burck, with all due respect. I am thinking perhaps you are in well enough proximity to the Chicago area, that you might me able to go fight the case. I would think there is not a more knowledgeable, well spoken, and experienced individual that could make these people understand. What do you say, Mr, Burck?
DanTheBooker
Dan,
What did you want me to make them understand? I will make the effort to go, as I assume Mark Rosenthal will be there, and I could probably learn some things from him
Bravo to The Johnsons for exhibiting their elephant in a bubble. Obviously, after 30 years of caring and working with elephants, THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING PEOPLE!!! Both exotic and domestic animals love to perform, and elephants are no exception. I wish the AR idiots would leave us alone.
Cynthia Kosco,
"exhibiting their elephant in a bubble"? I don't understand what are you saying/meaning?
Thank you,
Wade Burck
Dear Wade,
Responsible Exotic Animal Ownership (Rexano) just ran a story about the Johnson's finally being able to go ahead and pursue, I believe, the Guiness World Book of Records, with having an elephant in a giant soap bubble. Forgive me if these facts are wrong, it's been a long day and I read that first thing this morning.
Cynthia,
Thank you. Now I completely don't understand. LOL
Wade Burck
