Maybelle's Elephants

"Participants in the new elephant act with the Otis L. Smith Shows, to appear in the circus program with that organization. The lady is Mabel J. Smith, daughter of the show's owner and her pachyderm actors have been captioned "Maybelle's Elephants".
(Billboard 2/8/30)

These elephants "Eva" and "Danny" had been recently purchased from Floyd and Howard King's defunct Gentry Bros. Circus. While with the Smith Shows they were handled by former Barnum & Bailey elephant hand Joe Secastin.

Smith framed an entire one ring circus but his show went bust during the Depression. It's been suggested that he made those little cages and such that went to the never-opened All American Circus [as photographed by the late George Hubler] and then on to Terrell Jacobs, Lee Estes and CWM. Commerford & Shea also had one at one time.
