Adele Nelson Elephants #2

Scan000010945, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

These last three pictures were taken at Terrell Jacobs place in Peru where the Nelson elephants were laying off. They were squeezed into the cat barn next to "Modoc", "Empress" and "Judy" and my dad would watch them while Adele and Louie stayed at the Bearess Hotel. This was well before the big elephant barn was built.
On this occasion the Lion King was hosting a Circus Model Builders gathering. Seated on "Tillie" in the center is well known fan Gordon Potter while Jack Marsh holds Louie's lash hook.
I remember my dad saying that it was bitterly cold at the time and due to a lack of much heat in the barn he would heat a tent stake and then stick it into the water to take the chill off. However when Reed showed up from the hotel he simply marched his elephants across the highway, broke the ice with his stick and let them drink out of a creek.
Somewhere in the house I have a publication with a picture of all the Model Builders gathered in the barn on this day with my dad included.

I read somewhere that Frank Bostock used to do the same with ironbars to heat his cats water. On one ocassion a newspaper man saw the irons in the fire and reported the next day that Bostock used the hot irons to encourage the cats through the act! Bostock tried to reason with people stating that hot iron on cat fur would definitly leave marks and his cats coats were perfect but the Jack Londoners got involved and we are still feeling the effects today.

Joey,
We are feeling the effects of a lot of thing's today. History is to be studied and learned from, not necessarily to be emulated. Some thing's in the "good old days" need to be left there, and only the "really good old days" brought forward. The next generation might not have as many effects to worry about. If there is anything left.
