Rhoda Royal 1920

My dad ran away from a Military Academy in Bellbuckle , Tennessee to join this show. He later wrote on the back of this picture:
"Rhoda Royal World Touted Shows & Old Buffalo Wild West.
Unifon drawn by "Victor" and "Helen". Elephant man- "Congo"."

This show didn't make the season either.

Regarding the headpiece:
the two pieces of leather that origniate at the ring on the elephant's face and appear to pass under the roof of its mouth---is there a purpose other than decorative?

Was this a common or unique design?

Strictly ornamental.
As you can see they are ready for parade.
This is quite common in Europe.
