Whips!

Buckles,
As you may be remember I have made whips for years .Sort of a hobby. They are too time consuming to make any money doing it.
I want to learn how to make those old Beatty style whips. I have Roger Smith's Articles but they are not really specifically detailed. A photo or drawing would be very helpful. Would you by any chance have any clear photos showing just the basic design of this style of whip. They are a flat three leather strip slit braid. That is they are not like Gunter's or Axels which are a round braid.
Secondly I have been calling Junior but his number may have been changed. Do you have a current or updated one. Yes I checked the phone book to no avail.
And finally what ever happened to Sonny ? Axels right hand guy. He used to make good whips . I would contact him also if I knew how. I am trying to compile all this info and document how these older whips were constructed and made. Otherwise like all other art this too will be lost.

I'm not sure who authored this one, as a couple of guys asked for my whip-making articles lately. But...these instructions are detailed damn near to the point of tedium. Follow them, and you have your romanced and finished twisted whipstock, your three-strand flat lash, and your rolled and tapered poppers. Cherie Valentine ran this series of mine when she edited BACKYARD, and frankly I'm surprised at the space she gave me considering the minutiae provided. Photos were not included, as I'm of the literary bent that a thousand words is worth a picture.

Taylor had immense influence on young Beatty's developing performing style. For a European, Taylor was a rarity in working the fighting act. Except for a bit wherein Beatty doubled Raymond Hatton in the braided-jacket uniform style, in THE BIG CAGE, he departed from Taylor on wardrobe, but we have photos from that era where the hairstyles were similar.

Roger,
I know somebody else, in more modern times, who copied the hairstyle/color of a former great. I just don´t recall his name off hand.
