The music score for the 114th Edition’s elephant act (which had a country-western theme) opened with a long section of the “hoedown” music from Aaron Copland’s 1942 ballet "Rodeo." Since very few country-western fans even know who Aaron Copland is, the decision to use his music for the elephant act might very well have been a Bill Pruyn nod to the Circus’ 1942 elephant ballet that had had original music by Igor Stravinsky, another “modern” composer.
If you really look at this drawing, you could get the impression that the elephant is copping a feel. Which means that the ad people got one over on the show. A friend of mine has a son who has been in the advertising field for 50 some years and he says that if you can get some sex in the ad, it sells better, look at Joe Camel, balls and all! Bob Kitto
