buckles, is there any hint anywhere as to who the girl coming out of the cannon might be?
No one that I can recognize however in the credits on #8 I see Franz Woska, Jules Jacot and Capt. Rudy who would be Rudy Mueller the owner of "Rosie" who played the title role.
Would a trade magazine of the time give the names of the performers?? cc
In the rehearsal video I posted on, "Yesterday's Towns", Dec. 12,'07,(plug!) you can see the Cat Act,(Jules), with a pole w/ a platform, & a Rola-Bola act in the middle of the arena.
I love the way they set the cage up!
The Kimris rigging was was brought up completely assembled on a back stage elevator, all they had to do was hook it onto the winch cable.
The cannonball girl is Margaret Brooks. Her shot opened the circus action at JUMBO. William Brooks (her husband?) was seated in the front row of the audience and would jump into the ring to catch her. According to Variety ("'Jumbo Accidents," Jan. 4, 1936), one night she crashed into a very tall chorus boy whose nickname was--wait for it--Jumbo. Fortunately, neither was seriously hurt.
I'm a theatre historian currently working on a study of the 1935-36 Broadway season, so I'm very grateful to you circus historians and to sites like this. As a hybrid circus-musical, JUMBO has provided challenges to my research skills!
