How long did Circus World last as an attraction? Why do you think it didn't make it for the long haul?

I was there the first four years 1974-77 and I think it lingered on for another ten years or so.
I always thought the place had been constructed on an ancient Indian burial ground since all following venues suffered the same fate.
I understand it is now a housing community called "Poltergeist Estates".

Wasn't there some kind of baseball attraction in there after Circus World? I always thought it was an odd location given Ringling's historic identification with Sarasota. In the '70's and early '80's it was kind of stuck bewteen better known attractions in the Disney area and Cypress Gardens which was still a "brand name" and a vestige of the old Florida> The central Florida America Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) used to hold meetings at Cypress Gardens in the early '80's and I would always stop at Circus World on my way down from Gainesville. It was sad because it was so frequently a ghost town. I think the concept was good and still is... so maybe the Indian Burial Ground is as good a theory as any.

The CW park was just a beautiful dream place, way ahead of it's time. It was a fun and exciting place for us locals (townies) and the start of my love for the CIRCUS and the Williams and Woodcock family! Thanks for the memories. It is unreal when we pass by and there is nothing left of the Circus World that was...like a dream that we had and not a real place. It will always be fond and wonderful memories in my heart. Kinda funny that this topic is brought up today? Yesterday, I worked on six Peruvian Paso's down the road from the old World Of Animals park where I got my start and Buckles_ Hugo, George and Bonnie plus Rex's Gardner came from. It is now called "Falcons Lair" a damned housing development! Outside of the perimeter which was a creek on one side and a
Boy Scout camp on the other all I remember of it is in my head and heart. I'm sure I will feel the same sence of lose when I travel back to Fla one day and pass the old CW.

Buckles,
I would like to correct( no, it hasn´t frozen over) an earlier poste, and don´t want to muck up the dignity of Allen J. Bloom, so I hope here is fine. The young man´s name who caught the quad at MC is Pannini, not Pellagrini as I stated. The connection was bad, and she has an accent, so I misunderstood. The talented young man caught a second quad today, and is off tomorrow. Good for him.

Buckles,
I don´t know if my last poste went through. The young man who made the quad last night at MC is named Pannini, not Pelligrini as I earlier stated. Bad connection and her accent, caused me to hear wrong. The talented individual connected the quad a second time this evening, and has a well deserved day off tomorrow. Thanks for letting me make the correction, and credit to the deserving individual.

About seven years ago when we brought a house in the area Circus World was Boardwalk and Baseball, a poorly kept spring training facility for the K.C.Royals. They've been gone for a while and nothing happened on the property. The past year has brought quite a bit of construction at "Posner City". A new Target and several other stores will open this spring. It will be convienent but I'd rather hear some brass band and smell some elephants.

Have a question for Gary.
Was wondering what years that you worked at World of Animals in Grand Praire? We always took our kids to the park when we visted in Dallas/Ft.Worth. Can't believe that they would build a housing development there as the park was closed because of the flooding.

World Of Animals was located in Mesquite. You are talking about the old Lion Country Safari that was in GP. I did work there after I moved back to Texas. International Animal Exchange owned and ran the park as a holding area for their animals that they were stockpiling for the Japan Park they supplied. They had Abu the African there and I got to take care of him and a female asisan named Bubbles.

I worked at the Lion Country in Grand Prairie, TX, in '76. By then, it was among the most squalid animal slums in the nation, populated by the worst staff I've seen around animals. Their "lion rangers" enjoyed running over lions with jeeps, shooting them with pellet guns, and feeding in the fields so that the srong lions ate while the weaker ones starved for days at a time. The place was overseen by a very cold-hearted veterinarian who for a time was friends with my late cousin there. Among his staff was one guy who liked to repeatedly kick an aged cheetah in the face in front of guests of the veterinarian. For interested parties, I have the names of every one of these guys. All that came of that summer was an anemic few "investigative" stories by the Dallas Morning News.

Roger I remember reading about the problems they had there! Really bad press for the Animal Business! Some of those jerks were still around but had cleaned up their act abit. Do you remember the Bear trainer that used to train dolphins, that worked there? I never can remember his name?

My son's high school band played at Broadway and Baseball sometime in the late 80's and the only thing he brought from Florida was a really bad attack of breathing problems. The motel was full of mildew and it doesn't help if you have lung problems.
