Bailey Bros. Elephants #1 (From Buckles)

Scan000010715, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Big Bob Stevens and Mac MacDonald with what may have been the first baby elephants to enter the U.S. after WW 2. Of the five, these were the two smallest "Shirley" and "Mike" (female) Mac told me that "Mike" died but they managed to locate another punk but she died as well, her name also happened to be "Mike. So the act never exceeded four.
Mac must have liked the name since he used it twice more on elephants he trained years later while in retirement. An Asian male that eventually went to So. America with the Stebbings and an African female for John Cuneo who for some reason changed it to "Tyke".

Back to the statement made about Polk City elephants note being "roadworthy" is the dumbest word I have ever heard used concerning elephants. I understand that they [Ringling people] do not want elephants and especially young ones being collar chained on an animal walk for fear animal rights idiots would protest. Now why would you expect a young dog or a camel, horse, llama or zebra, etc. to walk anywhere with out being on a leash, so what is the difference with an elephant? Number two; There are nylon straps [or other materials] that can be used as a huge dog collar and the same to be used as a leash that would be just as accomadating as chains and in fact would be better in handling. I have used polyethelyne rope in place of chains many times for picket lines, etc. But certainly young elephants that are still learning general behaviors similar to a dog would certainly be tethered at various times. I see the "dog whisperer" on TV and certainly the dogs are on leashes and even have chock collars on. What's wrong with that and what is the difference with young elephants and in fact it should be required for the well being of the animal and the public. God there are some stupid people on both sides of the fence. Hard ass em all the way.

Buckles,
I seem to remember Ben Dewayne changing Mike/Mikey´s name to Tyke. Something about Mike being a boy´s name, and Tyke sounded neat when announcing the trike-o-death.

Col.,
Do you think we have helped our cause by wrapping our whips and hooks in black tape, "so the public can´t see it", knowing full well that we need it, "but only to cue them, not to hit them".
"Hey mister Horse trainer, do you poke the horse with those things"? "no, no boy´s and girl´s, they are to make my heels sparkle, plus they make a neat ching, ching, sound when I walk." Now use them, for the purpose intended, if even ever so subtle, and the boys and girls will come after you like gangbusters.
Truth be known, the boys and girls know what they are for. They just want you to use them right.

John, considering the bad connotation that chains have nowadays, I often wondered why cable wasn't used on picket lines. The leg tethers could even be made of colorful coated cable. Nowadays our country has become one of symbolism over substance, so big "dog collars" and leashes would be perfect, since most cities have leash laws, how could anyone object?

This was Iola, Kansas. Riverside Park is still there, a nice showgrounds. When I am through there again, I will visit the library for old newspaper accounts of their visit, and pass it on to Buckles.
