"Lydia"

Tesch's Lydia is still standing. Good god, how old would she be, certainly past working age right?
Dan H.

"This is "Lydia" shortly after her arrival in 1951, slightly less than a year old.
Seen here with Circus Historian Paul Van Pool.
My dad named her after Obert Miller's wife at the time.

Early in my career when asked how long elephants live, I would say, "Sixty is very old for an elephant and I never knew of any making it to seventy." People were always disappointed to hear this and I even overheard one saying, "I don't think he knows what he's talking about."

Consequently from that day forward I always answered, "A hundred and two!" and everyone seemed happy and I was considered a very wise man indeed."

Lydia spends her winters lounging around in Florida and summers on the coast of Maine. She is quite rotund and as sharp as a tack. She gives rides and does demonstrations, and at her own pace.Carmen and Dave are aware of her age and treat her accordingly. As far as "past working age" I don't think you could call what she does as "work" She moves twice a year and as I say "sets her own pace"
I believe she leads an ideal elephantine life. She doesn't like other elephants and gets lots of fussing from her humans, both her "family" and her fans.

Buckles,
When I did the bigtop tour on CBCB and got this question I aways answered that they lived to be about as old as humans. The people liked that answer and it made elephants more like people, although, elephants have it all over most of the people these days.
