Didn't get a single response yesterday despite getting 975 hits. Even "Pie in the Sky" has gone elsewhere. Strange goings-on. I just got Shannon to check things out and he discovered that through an error by Google, all yesterday's messages went to "Moderate Comments" and were mistakenly erased along with the "junk mail". The only exceptions were the few that came in overnight starting with Miss White's comments below. So let's start all over. If you will be kind enough to re-enter your messages regarding Mr. Beheim's excellent Ringling Red pictures, I will hold the Parker & Watts stuff until tomorrow. Incidently, the picture above came from Mark Rosenthal and refers to the recent Missouri-Kansas football game. |

What?! Not a single response?! Well, we can't have that. I'll try to put in my two cents as often as possible! This blog is as essential as my morning coffee!
For today's picture: Do you ever feel like you're the bird, and the tigers are...
a. the IRS
b. your credit card bills
c. your birthdays
d. your personal habits
e. *fill in your own*
and you know darn well it's just a matter of time before they catch up with you?
Had a nice week long visit with Jim Clubb when he came to oversee the new lion/tiger/liger act during opening here in Saitama, Japan. The act is presented by John Illig, and he is doing a superb job with this beautiful group expertly trained by Jim Clubb. Four tigers, four male lions and two giant ligers. Jim wanted me to tell you he reads and enjoys the blog daily, and regrets time does not permit more comments and participation. Keep up the good work!
Looks like the South Carolina Gamecocks / Clemson Tigers outing. I keep telling people that 15 years worth of tiger training tells me tigers eat chickens all the time but the SC Gamecock fans just laugh.
Bob
Miss White:
To the uniformed will you please explain why LIGERS do grow so big.
Do you have plans to return stateside in the near future?
Is it a chore to get meat for the cats in Japan and how does their cost of living compare to ours here in the States?
Sincere thanks.
Bob, Steve Spurrier will find a way to out think a big cat. He is after all a GATOR in chicken's clothing.
This photo looks to be computer enhanced...seems to be the same tiger in different running poses.
Do our tiger trainer / blog readers agree?
Should further be noted that nobody ever taught this particular chicken to stand fast and swing a garden rake as it is properly intended to be swung -- something I recall figuring pretty quickly when convincing young tigers that "dad" doesn't "play."
To "Under the bamboo tree"...
Why do ligers grow so big? Hmm. I've read it has something to do with their growth hormones being messed up due to hybridization, but quite honestly I haven't got a clue.
Plans to return stateside in the near future? Just for a visit with family and friends.
A chore to get meat in Japan? Nope, we feed imported Canadian horse shanks and necks, and locally bought chicken as a supplement- delivered right to the show's freezer.
Cost of living compared to the states? Some things are outrageously expensive, others about the same, nothing is less. But with living quarters provided by the show, and no car, the expenses are minimal. Food, internet service and satellite TV is about it.
You're sincerely welcome!
I hear that JRN won his lawsuit. Is this true.
I promise, without fear of contradiction, I can tell you exactly what this guinee hen is thinking at this moment. I agree with you Mr. Cole, on the enhancement. I saw it this morning when Mark emailed me the picture. It look's like the 4 on the left, have "merged" into the three on the right, as they neared the target. Wade Burck
Miss White,
Thank you for the most interesting insight into your experience in Japan.
Imagine that you can import frozen horse all the way from CANADA and it is economically feasible. Yet, the KOBE beef is imported to the USA at astronomical prices.
Do you have international celluar phone service or is the cost too high?
Sincere thanks, once again.
Pat,
How about "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you".
In the US, the big cats are supposed to have special feed now that the government has taken over and doesn't realize that the cats in the wild eat anything that they can catch, including rancid meat, not just 1 day out of date in the frozen food section.
Always enjoy your comments,
Bob Kitto
Once upon a time when I was young and dumb, as opposed to older and still dumb as I am today, we were living in Gainesville in a little trailer off Alachua Road sharing the space with about 100 various venomous snakes that we would pack into the van and cart off to “Sportsman’s Shows” on the weekends to do a little rattlesnake song and dance. I had all of the respect in the world for most of those snakes, but as I said, I was young and dumb and eventually I noticed that there were a few that seemed to completely ignore me when I did things like open the cage to pull out a water bowl. Never one to waste five seconds on simple safety, it didn’t take me too long to decide that I could just reach in to some of those cages, pull out the dish, and replace it with a fresh one. Worked pretty well for awhile. Then one day I was reaching into a cage with a four foot blacktailed rattler from New Mexico, and just as I grabbed a hold of the water dish the snake turned around in the tank and noticed. There was no frigging way in the world I was getting my hand out of that tank in time. And if birds understand the concept of “Well and truly f@%ked” as I remember understanding it with incredible clarity on that particular afternoon, I can guess what’s going through its mind. Sometimes you just can’t move fast enough.
On the bright side the bird isn’t gonna live long enough to be ridiculed by a girlfriend who comes to the hospital and just can’t help herself when she hears the story in the quiet of the Shands ICU. She laughed, and laughed, and laughed.
It was a story I didn't repeat often in seeking employment.
In my humble opinion, I don't believe the photo was doctored.
Some things just can't be done to change a photo. The photo is not clear enough (due to motion) to distinguish different stripping either.
Also, I have seen here in Thailand at the Sri Ratcha Tiger Zoo, large groups of tigers living together in one enclosure such as the one in the photo. I once counted 19 adults in one pen with minimum friction during the hour I watched.
Mr. Kitto, if a tiger is eating "rancid" meat in the wild, chances are he found it, and did not catch it. Eating it was most likely the only option available for survival at the moment. The unfortunate need for regulation of some type, negates anybody feeding it in captivity because, "they do it in the wild." Wade Burck
P.S. Bambooster, if you think Kobe beef is expensive here in the US, order a steak in Tokyo sometime. Make sure you have lot's of cash, they won't let you remorgage over there. Wade Burck
Bob, I agree with you, sometimes the regulations on animal feed seem extreme. But I'm all for the critters in captivity having the best quality food available, regardless of what glop they may eat naturally in the wild.
Bamboo: The Kobe beef is so expensive not just because of it's Japanese origin; it's because of all the employees they pay to massage the cows hours each day while they're growing, for that tender texture the beef is known for!
No, no cell phone, just a land line with a different number each town. That's you, isn't it Dennis.
This picture, I believe is from the Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin, China, where visitors can buy live animals to feed to the tigers. Here's the YouTube link

Pat and Wade,
What I was trying to say that when the government gets into helping? in a host of areas, the end result is usually a mess. Thank you both for replying.

Bob,
Sorry, for the misundrstanding. Now that you have explained, I concur 100%. And yes, Saraso ta da get out the heavy coat, as hell has now frozen over.
Wade Burck
Wade,
We have had 3 fairly good snows in the past 7 days. If hell freezes over in southern Wis, I will let you know. It was 6 degrees above zero (US) this morning, it got up to 14 this afternoon and is now snowing. My driveway has about 2 inches of ice and it will stay that way until we get some sun and maybe 32 degrees. All the salt I put on it isn't having any effect so far.
Bob Kitto
Bob,
After growing up in North Dakota, I figuired if I joined the circus, I could live in Florida where it was warm. Don't our life plan's take a strange turn sometimes.
I quit using salt 3 day's ago on the ice here. Instead of melting, it seems to be consuming it like a vitamin suppliment, and growing harder and thicker. Stay warm, my friend. Wade Burck
