These type of headpieces/masks were used with the Family Togni worked on Ringling. It was a space theme and the trappings were in silver.
Also, the Family Togni were/are very smart people as they video taped EVERYTHING on Ringling from the show to the backyard to the concession department. They brought their newly acquired intellectual knowledge back to Italy to incorporate into their Circo Americano.
Wonderful presentation. They sure do ip right. Notice Flavio still enjoys his family Pasta gatherings. Maybe too much. But it tastes so good with the wine.
And one might take note that it is done on a tent circus not 20,000seat arenas the economics must be quite different, especially considering that they stay almost completely in Italy, a country with what an eigth our population I think a rousing "Well done "is due the Togni family !
Would you be so kind as to send a copy of the Ringling tape to the main office in Vienna, Virginia ATTN: Production Office.
It would be very helpful in reminding the current generation of Feld producers that whilst they were in nursery school the Ringling show presented a very fine CIRCUS.
Larry, you got the point. The Circo Americano afford this production value in a touring tent, with a limited market as Italy and obvious economic constraint comparing to the the Usa: with the elephants, the three rings of horses, the water spectacular in the finale, a proper sound and lighting system, and some great booked acts. It is hard and risky, but they do it. The same is said for the Bouglione: their production is conceived only for 5 months in the same building, but it is at his bests, with new costumes and animals every year, and probably the best and largest circus band in the world.
Re: the Family Togni elephant act on Ringling: the headpieces/masks were wired with small electric lights. When the elephants made their entrance, the arena was in total darkness. All you could see was a parade of large animals outlined in lights. As I recall, the first thing they did was a long mount. Outlined in the lights, it was most impressive.
This other version is done in "black light":the costumes and headpieces are with fluorescent fabric. So, when elephants enters in the dark, you just see the wings on the girls costumes and the colours around the eyes of the elephants.
I'm wondering why (apart from Big Apple) American circuses never went to long stands, and put the travelling money and the cost of advertising in 7 different towns a week into the type of immaculate productions that are common in Europe. Nevermind the wear and tear on equipment. I know lots of shows tried, to a degree. But I can't believe that the theatrical type seating, lights and presentation wouldn't be welcome here. Then too, European circus owners seem to be predomenantly very versitile trainers and performers themselves, which I think goes a long way towards understanding artistic presentation.
