Susanna Svenson presented a classical solo bareback number five years ago on Big Apple Circus.

Of course, this is the origin of the circus and what's left...? But a technical question--are the remaining riding acts truly BAREBACK or pad acts? Europe has a few more than the US but what's left, of either style, overseas? How many people in them and what tricks are done?

One of the most exciting opening acts I remember was the Big Apple 25th anniversay show that Don refers to when, not only the principal act of Susanna Svenson appeared, but the display also packed in a big display of several horses and riders together that was reminiscent of the big people acts of the Loyal Repensky troupe. More than anything I have seen, it said CIRCUS in a big, big way on what was one of the best shows I have ever seen in my lifetime of seeing circus since the late 1950s.

Standup riding is done by some non-professionals and there are even some recent books on the subject from which to learn! Too bad riding and even some basic animal training as with dogs are not taught in some of the many circus camps around the country.
