Buckles and Col. Herriott,
Now that by God, is the correct way to use a twisted willow!!!! Sad thing is, I still haven't learned to stay the hell back. The tiger's name is Emir, and she gave me my first "corona". In case you are wondering Casey, that's Matador speak for "horn up the ass". I had those fine boot's made in Mexico City for a cost of $75.00(a weeks salary). Pat Anthony took me to the boot maker, where he was having 3 pairs made, (he was a headliner, and could afford 3). After going back three times to get them, and they were never done, Pat jumped his traces, pitched a fit, and threw every pair of shoe's and boot's in the shop, out into the street. I assure you they were ready Manyana.
This photo was taken, last show in St. Paul, Minn., in I believe 1974/75. I had the flu, and a 102 temp. We had an over night jump down to Larado, Texas. George Carden was ramrodding the concession's for his father Larry, at the time, and he bullsh, sorry convinces, me that because I am so sick, I don't have to drive, and I can just sleep like a rock star, while he drives. They load me in the back of his pick-up with a leaky topper, loaded with ring rubber for a bed, and just like Elvis, I was transported to Texas, with George driving and Cleo Plunkett having a "few for the road" while he navigates. I am sure, if I stick this "thing of our's" out for a few more years, it should get better. And I apologize to my mother, because there is only one Putz hateful enought to send this photo, to remind me of the "good old day's" Wade Burck
I just Looooove the hair-do.
I Must have road with Herta hauling The Larry to get his face stitches up at least four times the first year at Marine-land,the second year I worked in Johns place in Herta's act for a few weeks and I'll be dam if I got clipped in the face by one of her Himalayans and the Larry got his revenged that day. However he was kind enough to give me the name of his seamstress.
Anonymous, David Cassidy, of Partidge Family fame, loved my hair do also. That's why he copied it. Wade Burck
Mr. Hall would you expect less when "The Larry" requests that you put Boo-Boo's tie back on...Jim Zajicek
Wow...I am in awe... The wardrobe, the style, the never before seen Paw-O-death. I can see it was an easy choice for RBBB.
Partridge in a Pear Tree, In response to your question, on the wrong poste,(boy, talk about upside down) about the hippy bus, the answer is no, I don't still have it. I sold it to Rudolf Simmsy years ago. Wade Burck
Casey, maybe you will now appreciate GGW, and his achievement's even more. The great man only had a short time, after his arrival to relax, before I "burst" upon the scene. It was a hell of a foot race, but I never could quite catch him. Wade Burck
James C. Hall, where does the time go. One minute we are young, stupid asshole's, and before we know it, we are old, stupid asshole's. Did you ever think the day would come, when we would laugh about our incompetance? Back then it was pretty serious, and we dummied up, because we didn't want people like Klauser, Pallenberg, Rix, Anthony, Baumann, GGW, Woodcock, Jones, Gautier etc. etc. to think we were moron's. I guess there is some good, in the good old day's. Wade Burck
P.S. I believe you had Herta autograph your lip gauze. Do you still have it? I still have that stupid bull hook you made me, that bounced back, and caught me above the eye. It is in good shape after all these year's. I only used it that one time. Wade Burck
Jim Zajicek, I hope some day you appreciate Mr. Hall and myself, and our effort's to "fix you." We come from a long line of, 'shit, I did it wrong", and we feel you are worthy of our counsel. I know it is frustrating at times when you think you are right, and we reach into our "bag of stupid" and show you, you are wrong. But we are frustrated also. It has never taken us this long to correct somebody. Wade Burck
Wade I enjoyed your comment about GGW and not quite catching up. For thirty years he cast a shadow over the career of great trainers that doesn't seem fair even tho we certainly had great respect for him and not jealousy or "sour grapes", but it is true and we were put on the back burner.
That was true in the Beatty era as well, however Beatty was only wild animals, but to Beattys credit he went thru the Alfed Court years and came thru still on top.
One more thing, Mr. Black Rubber Muck Out Boot's Dressed In White Like Clyde Beatty Cainine,
Thank you for the "wardrobe critique". It is important to dispense useful information to our comrades, as they strive to reach the pinnacle. James C. Hall and I are awaiting your arrival up here. Why don't to see if you can get Shane and LAD to come along. Wade Burck
Col. Herriott, don't pretend you are faultless in the world of "casting shadow's". I know of a fine liberty act, that I trained, and you worked for a few month's, that is announced to this day, as being trained by "the Great Col. Johnny Herriott". I realize if they announced, trained by Wade Burck, half the audience would say, "what the hell does he know about horses!!!!) But not for nothing, Col. Do you think it would be a problem if they announced , "trained by the guy, that the Great Col. Johnny Herriott trained?" Your achievment's have done some of tha shadow deal too. I, for one, thank you for the bottom of my heart. Wade Burck
Man!!!! This beats the hell out of "Jerry Springer" any day!!!!
Mr. Burck/Mr. Hall....As I wear a "wooden leg" (figurativly speaking) from repeatedly shooting myself in the FOOT!!!...It is quite comforting to know that my "Good" freinds keep a loaded gun readily avaiable at arms reach for my disposal...Thanks!!..Jim Zajicek
Your wives should have been suspicious BEFORE they married you.
Dutchess! Did you finally get back online here? Been missing you!:) Sorry Wade, them girls been gangin up on ya!
Don't let them twist your willow, Wade, there's still some of us on your side. We're dwingling, but we're on your side, ole buddy.
Dear Mr. Burck:
Since I am only a circus fan, I do not have the expertise of many of the esteemed colleagues of yours that respond on this Blog, BUT just the same, I like to think that people like me who buy our tickets to see the shows that we love so much, are ultimately the ones who contribute to your paycheck, so I believe that gives us the chance to comment as well. I saw you on Ringling with the White Tiger Act and I remember being just as thrilled and impressed with your performance as that of anyone else that I have seen in my lifetime including GGW and the great Mr. Beatty himself. You may recall that I was the one who asked you to sign a publicity photo of yours and my copy of the book, "Wild Animal Trainers in America" at the St. Paul Shrine date a few years ago, and I must say that I was just as thrilled by your gracious response, probably even moreso than when I asked GGW who gave the air that he could have cared less, as anyone else that I have had the pleasure to meet in the circus world. Don't underestimate yourself or your place in Circus History as you have a deserving place there right along with your colleagues. Enough said and Thank You for your contributions to CIRCUS!
Neil Cockerline, Minneapolis
James Hall, Did you work with the elephant Thai when you were at Marineland?
Daryl
Well the "Church of Adoration for Wade Burch" has just doubled its membership...it now includes Wade and the gentleman from Minneapolis.
Wade, I'm kidding buddy, dont get all worked up, your bowels can't take the pressure.
Daryl
Give me a shout. circusdays@yahoo.com dion
You guys need to stop messaging this old mans ego. If his head gets any bigger he will have to have Jo Anne enlarge the neck hole on his new Evensville wardrobe. Besides she is busy enough there sewing up all the crotches he keeps tearing out!
Wade's Apprentice
Daryl,
James C. Hall never worked an elephant in his life, let alone one named Thai. Not unless you consider the sad spectacle of him trying to keep the last, and the second to last elephant up in Tim Frisco's fine long mount, "working an elephant." As Herta Cuneo said, "as goofy as he is, I think he was smart to stick with bears." I think you have the wrong Marineland. The one where James C. Hall became a legend, is Marineland and Game Farm, in Niagara Falls Canada Wade Burck
Mr. Cainine.
The Paw-O-Death is a serious trick. It ranks up there with the famous Cage Stand-O-Death and the very difficult Kiss-O-Death!
Wade's Apprentice
5 tubeless tires, 4 quarts of gin, 3 cigars, 2 cigarettes and partridge in a pear tree.
Regards, Stan Freeberg
I can hear mr. Cuneo in the back ground."Now Wade the way we used to do the paw-o-death:................
Now this is the kind of "circus love" I remember!
Hippie Horsegroom
Sorry Wade, I don't have any Partridges In My Pear Tree this time. It must be one of the your other ex-wives..
The Marineland I am refering to is the same one. They used to have an elephant show in the early or mid 80's
Daryl
Daryl, Then you may be refering to an African elephant who was originally named Mike(Mikey). Her name was later changed to Tyke. Occassionally, in the heat of the moment, it would be shortened to Ty. That is the only elephant that was named Ty at Marinedland and Game Farm. She later gained noteriety in Hawaii. Hope that help's. Wade Burck
P.S. With respect, save yourself time and trouble and don't address elephant related inquiries to James C. Hall. That dog don't hunt.
Margaret, dear, you are amongst friends. Please share with us some Wade stories. The wilder the better.
Cheerio!
Wade buddy, you ok? Need staples, glue or tape? All this paper you have hung, is working. You already have a circus fan, and some poor guy (maybe a girl) claiming to be your apprentice, coming to your aid. The FAN even said your act was good. You are making a go at this CAREER thing. Try to keep the buzz going till "THE DATE" and even the prop guys will be boosting you up. Keep up the fine work my friend.
Casey,
I was going to visit you but the town you were playing was so small that it wasn't even on the map.
Boy the "Larry" sure gets brave when he knows I will be en route and unable to get to the gossip column
To "Daryl"
In regards to Elephant named Thai that could have been one of Eloise Burchtold From the Morgan Berry Herd?
AKA Tuskers of Thailand I am sorry to say I do not remember the names of that bunch as I did not groom any around them,The "Larry" had not come on the scene at that point and I don't recall filling him in on that bit of information. Also The "The Larry" Not to be confused with the famous "Larry Larry" also of the mighty steal arena or the more recent protoge employed by Mr.C. "Son Of The Larry". The fact is I have never worked an elephant in the show is absoultly true.
However the fact also remains that I am on my 38th,year and am about to complete a 40 year apprenticeship that has him worried as he knows I have had my resume` in on my long and highly anticipated and the eagerly awaited return of Mr.Hugo so I can apply for a job as one of his "grooms"
P.S.Another fact I truly believe that I still hold the record for training an elephant single handedly to pull up a record 27 foot piece of duct tape off the floor during come-in at the Evansville date.
Also I don't want to brag but I have a couple of fair size pieces of celotex as personal trophies in my collection
James C. Hall,
Wow!!!! You have three people proof reading and spell-checking for you in K.C., and all of a sudden you are John Grisham. Hold back a week until they learn to read better, okay. Daryl asked about an elephant at Marineland in the early 80's. Eloise was there in 1976, the first year John's Cuneo and Holter brought me in to "soup up the show", as ticket sale's were down after the departure of Bobby Gibbs. The "Testoserone Trio" that Eloise had there, in addition to her great mixed act, were name Thai, Teak, and Ranchy(Ranchipor). You would have know that, if you hadn't been so busy pointing out to anybody that would listen, that Cuneo was "really scrapping the bottom of the barrel this time, with the new tiger guy he just hired". Wade Burck
Mr.Hall..Your comments on The "Larry", "Son of Larry", or "Larry Larry" may very well be TRUE!...However....as for pulling up duct tape by a Elephant in Evansville...your Texas gray Mouse at a mere 27' would be a lame attempt at the real "RECORD"..Sadly for you..I,yes I was in control/uncontrol of the Elephant that the standard of duct tape pulling was established in Evansville... I will not reveal the "Record measurement" here...As to prevent you from trying to establish a "New" record...However, I cannot claim to have trained this Record breaking feat....Although I do know she recieved schooling by these 3 fine men.. Hugo, Buckles and Rex, prior to my arrival on the scene??? I also will not reveal this MIGHTY PACKYDERMS name, However she arrived from over-seas from the Billy Smart herd....Eat your heart out Mr. Hall!!!....Jim Zajicek P.S.Will the Educator of this Mighty Beast step forward.....P.S.S Mr. Hall, I also have some celo-tex in my collection......If I ever decide to have the pieces "Surgically" removed!!
Whats this about GGW, and "I burst upon the scene and the foot race was on" B.S?
I wish you would keep your mouth shut now every body will know that the hair bleach we used did have an effect on us after all.
P.S.Why do I get the felling that Mr.GGW,was totally in the dark on the subject?
Wade I did not say Mr.C.scraped the bottom of the barrel for a tiger trainer. I did say he scraped the bottom of the "Larry's" for this guy.
This went way beyond the bottom of the barrel.
P.S.you should have given "Daryl" that Thai information on the first go-around.
I am not getting involved Dutchess. As I was once related to " The Larry" and am still related to " The Son Of Larry" what exactly does that make me?
And as for Wade's willow, I remember it being a little kinky, but never twisted.
James C. Hall,
"Early to mid 80's" was the question. Not the "mid 70's". I thought I had answered the question to the best of my recollection. Here we are at my first "publicity photo" acting like Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthou, putting the moves on Ann Margaret, when we should be honoring my exploits. Wade Burck
Jim Zajicek,
See? Now pay up with that fin, and add this "nugget"(Pat's word), to your animal training notebook. You will find it useful, if you ever decide to work with something again besides two nosed cow's, and five legged sheep. "You can even make a hippo dance. All you have to do is find the soft spot's, and start poking away." Wade Burck
Margaret,
Thank you for the "endorsement". Although the engine has a few miles on it, regular service has kept it running pretty well. My best, Wade Burck
Not twisted but kinky......a picture I'll have in my mind for the next few days.
Thanks for sharing, hmmm kinky, huh?
Mr. Hall/Mr. Burck, or Rather,The Sidekick of Larry/The Larry....When you Larry's are done playin with MY "Gun"...can you put it BACK!!!...My Foot's startin to itch??........Jim Zajicek
In regards to Casey's "congeniality"
At the preset I am in Kansas city at the auditorium down town. A thought has come to mind about the first time I visited this place. It was 30 + years ago, I was touring thru Mo with the Carden and Johnson Circus and came to town to catch one of the RBBB units. Coming up to the basement back door, the day watchman asked if he could help me. I told him I was looking for John Herriot. I was told he wasn't at present on the show and then he ask if I was from the circus. I told him what I did and he asked if I would like to see the stock. I said sure. Around we went on his golf cart. Then he asked if I would like to see the show? If you can square it, sure, and up the ramps he took me. After the show, I returned to this gent to chat a bit and thank him for the freebies as I had a great time. Also saw Laura H.,she was a show girl that year. This guy on the golf cart had a cast on his leg. I asked what happened & he said he was standing on a cage tongue, it came unhooked and he got caught between it and the tug.
Sure was some fond memories of this place.
P.S.That was the first time I met Gunther Gabel Williams cast and all.
