This is not Medrano but Nouveau Cirque, just before his demolition. The other picture, is under the big top of Zoo Circus Court. In fact, those are the lions of Alfred Court's first group. Thetard, that was an amateur trainer (I don't think never performed in public) is considered the first great writer and historian of circus and animal trainers. His books "Les dompteurs" and "La merveilleuse histoire du cirque" (1945) are considered the circus bible still today.

An amateur with some talent it would seem. It's incredible how formal the poses appear in photographs. Could have been lifted from Bostock thirty years before.
