From Jamie Clubb

Dear ECA members, relations and circus media.

The ECA and circuses in the UK had a big success yesterday.

The report made by the scientific group, established by the UK Ministry (DEFRA) reported yesterday as one of the conclusions:

‘8.6.2. ……………………. The overriding conclusion of this exercise is that our present state of knowledge about the welfare of non-domesticated animals used in circuses is such that we cannot look to scientific evidence for a steer in the development of policy; it is, ultimately, an entirely political decision. Once the relevant policy is decided upon, its implementation is essentially a question of politics and law; science, on this occasion, provides no relevant guidance as to the appropriate principle to be adopted.

That means that we proved that there is no reason to ban non domesticated animals in circuses for welfare reasons.

The BBC started a poll now to see what the reactions from the public are.

See on website:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7103340.stm

The poll is currently indicated 77% in favor of banning animals in the circus with some 5,000 having voted.

This means we all have to send as many positive votes TODAY BY E –MAIL.

So please help. Send this message to all your relations and ask for their immediate help.

Not just exotics but ALL Animals.

Could you please add your vote to prevent the BBC in London having ammunition to try to ban ALL ANIMALS from circuses.

Please ask as many of your families and staff to register a separate vote.

Buckles; Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks to you for the fun blog.

A friend sent me a dvd with several episodes of "Super Circus", one of which has your mom and dad with Lydia, Anna Mae and an anonymous pachyderm as "The Miller-Woodcock Elephants".

I suppose you have a copy already, but one never knows, so in case you don't have one, let me know if you would like a copy. I will be only too happy to send you one.

Stay well and have a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christ-mas.

Voted. Happy Thanksgiving to all. I would really like to get a copy of the complete report. This makes twice that real scientific examinations of circus animal practices in the UK have surprised the "activists" by concluding (no surprise to all of us) that most circuses do a pretty good job with animal management.

Pat- We made that Super Circus TV show in Chicago about three times.
The third elephant was named "Fanny".
As I type this, Shannon is setting up another format to show film clips this would nice addition.

Where do we go to vote online?

I think the voting is closed now. The poll was on the right side of the web page yesterday. A guy I used to work with at the Bronx Zoo came by yesterday to join us for Thanksgiving and after the feast we sat in a faux pub a couple block from the house with a laptop logging on to various unprotected WiFi signals so that we could vote again and again. The "Pro" ban vote was down to about 70% the last time I saw it. I really do hope that the advisory study is available to read.
