What was the verbal command that was spoken or shouted to commence the walk to the lot? Were there others that were commonly used during the walk? Did they vary from head man to head man, or show to show?

The command I always gave was "Goin' Away!".
But I have heard of others yelling "Out West!".

Gunther would yell something that sounded like "hutley, hutley". I have heard "move out", but I think Buckles is right with "go on away". Hugo would just say "go on".I heard George Emerson say "out west" and it would probably be from the Barnes west coast days. Kinda neat when I heard it.

would they call the elephants with the same names something else when working them, or just jewell or babe, then use the show name for reference to which one, or was it Barnes babe, move up? seems it would be easier to rename the elephants.

Marcella died just before I arrived on the show, but had the pleasure to work Icky as my lead elephant for the last years of her life. These were the last remaining of this group in 1978.

We had five elephants in Ring 1 worked by Zig Solis in 1977 on the Blue Unit. Icky was ridden by showgirl Janet Curry. Kernaudi was in the seven group in ring 2. Marcella was only used in spec, covered with a blanket to hide the fact that she was sort of thin. She was retired to Circus World on our first jump from Venice to Lakeland. Axel said that she had been on the show for 64 years. They threw a big "retirement party" for Marcella as a publicity stunt. She didn't last long after retiring.

Hi Elmo- The "Kernaudi" listed here was one of the five elephants brought from Germany when Hugo Schmitt first came to this country in 1947. She died in 1960 at Beechbend Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
Your "Kernaudi" was imported by the Ringling Show in 1963 along with another punk named "Roma".
Hugo often used the same name on elephants, for some reason "Mudu" and "Tagu" were his favorites.
