Note how long the front of the head piece hangs down. When they arrived in Venice from Europe they had those chains that connected together around the trunk. Seems like Hugo redlighted them right away. I guess they are popular in Europe. Anyway that is why they hang down so far. I think I can see the rings on both sides.

Buckles or Johnny, Originally the front "plate?" was of a ceramic type material. Do you know what it was, and how are they making them now? They were always very distinctive. Wade Burck

As I remember,(circa 1974)they were metal plates with a painted enamel. Depending on the tricks, some of the paint wore off more on some than on others. (head stands, etc...) They were connected with thick leather straps, and I remember, they were heavy for a "delicate, female" elephant handler like me (ha-ha)!My dad was an artist, and the summer I worked for Barbara & Buckles at Circus World, I took a couple of the headpieces home one night to see if my dad could figure out how to fix or re-paint them, but to no avail...

When I was on Winter Quarters crew before I worked for Buckles, there must of been 100's of old head pieces in the old warehouse. I always wanted to keep one, but I guess I'm too honest? I wanted to keep my whip I always carried with Jewell New's Lion act, but I left it there? Should have asked for it?
