Wallace Bros. Circus 1940 #4

Scan10162, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Nice spread of canvas here, looks to be 120' with three 40's, while on the the H-M route, an additional 500 seats had to be added.

And low and behold, there is the jigger in plain sight.

I was enjoying a beer with Rex one evening while watching the Vargas big top being taken down.
The order was given to drop the peaks and when the bail rings got about half way down, all four center poles collapsed, rigging and all, including the electrical signs that read "Circus Vargas". What a mess.
I said "Christ, what happened?" and Rex calmly replied, "Somebody untied the back jigger".

The year that RBBB's lock out forced Dobritch out of the Sports Arena, he set up across the horseshoe end of the Coliseum, including 10 center poles for the ballet. One additional problem was a track meet Sat. morning meaning the show had to tear down then set up for a night show. The prop boss was drunk so one of the performers assured Al he would get the poles back up. They laid them out, attached the guy lines, blocks, ridge cables etc., then they proceeded to raise them. They went up, over, and down the other side, they had neglected to tie off the back end.

I saw the Knie poles come down when an anchor pulled. A forklift/tractor was flipped over by a pole striking the forks on the way down. And I will never forget the "singing" of broken cables whipping across the lot.fortunately no-one was hurt ,and the only real damage was to the "K" "N" "I" "E" sign boxes
