What a magnificent tusker. I think this must be the bull named "Naing Thein." At my last count Emmen had 5-10 Asians. They got new blood via 1979 and 1980 imports from Burma.

Can anyone identify the tusker for sure?

Someone might confirm or discredit what I heard about the Emmen elephant facility. The barn is actually below the display. A pneumatic doors open (like old cellar doors) and the animals go down steps into the barn.

no... Naing Thein doesnt have tusks... he has been moved from Emmen zoo years ago, he is at Prada Zoo with two older females. The bull is Radza actually. He is a beautiful tusker for sure.

Jim - the barn is under ground but not under the outdoor arena that I know of. There is a ramp, not steps. They go down the corridor then in a round area then another corridor out to the outdoor area. A new elephant facility is under works, I hear. Supposedly to be really excellent, similar to the Cologne zoo.
