Ringlings return to Baraboo 1962 #1

I wonder how many of you are aware that the Ringling Show laid off in Baraboo during some open time in July of 1962. Here is the elephant herd at the fairgrounds.
Today they don't have this many elephants with all three units combined.

To Richard Reynolds. What is the name of the African shown in this photo?

That is none other than the great male Diamond, though not so titanic in '62 as he would become after he went to Knoxville zoo (ca. 11' the shoulder). He arrived on RBBB in 1955 and was broken to the ring by Hugo Schmitt. The show decided to get rid of him and did so the next year - - 1963 - - to Knoxville. There he sired the first viable African elephant calves ever born in USA.

This photo must have been taken at the Boo City Fairgrounds where RBBB encamped for their midsummer layoff. The show closed in Chicago on July 1, went to Baraboo, and reopened in Sioux FAlls, SD on July 17.

Someone ought to write a piece about that.
